Loie Hollowell

Loie Hollowell is an American painter known for glowing, symmetrical abstract paintings that are also, underneath, pictures of the body. Her canvases look like geometric abstractions, with arches, orbs, split circles and radiating bands of colour. Each one starts from a physical experience: arousal, pregnancy, labour, breastfeeding, or the changes a body goes through over time. She calls them "abstract body landscapes." Over the past decade that mix of rigorous formal control and frank physicality has made her one of the most talked-about painters of her generation.
